Blast from the Past! (Top Ten First Chapter Books)

I am so sad now that the school year is starting and I don't have anyone to homeschool anymore.  I am going to be super busy.  I am going to start watching our resident 3 year old in a week. And I'll be nannying my new grandson come October.  I mean I am going to be BUSY!  

Still, feeling nostalgic, I went back to my old blog posts.  I remember those days, after it taking so long for reading to finally click, when my kids would lose themselves in a book.  Must be one of greatest joys to witness.

August Rabbit Trails

My family usually tries to go to the beach for a week in August.  We don't do this quite every summer.  We've sometimes gone to other places, but mostly the beach.  This summer we went over the July 4th week because we are expecting our grandchild sometime around August 8th!  That's the due date.  Even if you live far from the sea and maybe visit other bodies of water (pond, lakes, rivers) I'll include some of things we've read and done over the years. October - All Things Autumnal

Where I live, October is a glorious month!  It a time of golden leaves, cozy sweaters, hot apple cider.  I say do up October the right way.  Make it about joy! October is the month of the rosary Plan lots of fun outings: Pumpkin Patches Corn mazes Bonfires Apple picking Hike through the changing woods Hayrides Stuffing a scarecrow! Rabbit Trails: Now that temperatures are cooling down, make cooking a big deal to celebrate the harvest! Learn to make things like applesauce from apple picking Make granola from rolled oats, dried fruits and nuts - it is easy to make and quick and the scent of roasting oats is wonderful. Anything pumpkin flavored from pies, to breads to cookies,  You can expand to to other winter squashes. Make caramel apples! Favorite Resouce - Mummifying Apples Experiment

We were on an Egypt jag.  I was reading The Golden Goblet out loud to everyone.  We listened to Jim Weiss' cd Egyptian Treasures, Mummies and Myths. We watched Joseph and the Amazing Techicolored Dreamcoat and The Prince of Egypt. We'd gotten tons of books out of the library on mummies and pyramid, hieroglyphics and the Nile river. We went to the traveling King Tut exhibit two hours away in Richmond.  (And then again years later when the younger kids were enthralled with Egypt we went to New York City and visited the Metropolitan museum up there.  We went through two distinct Egypt jags, one with the older 3 kids and one with the younger two). I attempted the famous mummified chicken activity of Susan Wise Bauer fame, but alas keeping a chicken in a dark cupboard was fatal to it's success.  Weeks later I realized I'd forgotten about it.  Boy did it stink!  Gag!
